Saracens v Harlequins Gallagher Premiership Rugby

Ahead of Showdown VI, we sat down with winger Tobias Elliott to talk about his return to the pitch, Showdown memories and the must-win fixture against Northampton Saints.

You’ve recently returned from a long term injury how rewarding is it to be playing consistent top flight rugby again?

Yeah, it was a tough few months for me, especially with it being my first sort of long term injury. But unfortunately, that does happen in rugby. I feel like I was able to come away from it with a few extra bits of knowledge and almost a new appreciation for playing again, and not taking any of it for granted.

That realisation has made it even more special to come back and be able to play top flight rugby again. You work so hard for it, especially in your rehab, so it’s amazing to be back out there with a great group and playing against such strong teams.

This is your second Showdown how was last year as an experience for you?

Yeah, this will be my second Showdown, and I’m very grateful to be a part of it again. Last year’s result wasn’t what we wanted, but the atmosphere and excitement around the event was incredible.

It’s like nothing else. Playing in a stadium like Tottenham was really special and a bit of a treat for all of us. Hopefully we can back it up this year with a good result and make it even more special.

Your try celebration is a Showdown classic Can we expect anything different this year?

I had a few of the boys on me last year about celebrations, but this time I’ll just focus on doing my job. If I’m fortunate enough to get over the line, we’ll see what I’m feeling in the moment.

What makes big days out like this so special for players?

Playing in a stadium like Tottenham, with such a big build up, creates real anticipation. It’s an event everyone wants to do well in.

It’s a hyped up occasion against a great team, and I think a lot of players thrive in that environment. It brings out the best in people. For me, it’s the occasion, the opposition, and the atmosphere that make it so special. I’m just really looking forward to it.

What will Northampton bring to the game today?

Northampton are a great outfit. They’ve shown that already this season. Being top of the league and the results they’ve had speak for themselves.

They’ll bring a strong attacking threat, and it’ll be a great challenge for us, one we’ll relish, especially on such a big occasion.

How important is this match for Saracens Premiership season?

It’s massive. Aside from the occasion, this is a must win game for us.

We know we’ve worked really hard and fine tuned a lot of detail to make sure we’re in the best possible position to get a result on Saturday.

A final message to fans attending the Showdown VI?

Enjoy the day out. I know the team at Saracens have put blood, sweat and tears into making this event happen, so make the most of it.

Enjoy what might be the cheapest Dizzee Rascal tickets you’ll ever get and I can’t wait to see you all there.
