Tonga

Saracens is thrilled to confirm that the fundraising to support the Friends of Tonga Charity who are  helping to repair the damage caused by the Tsunami raised an incredible £14,888.56.

The fundraising, on behalf of Mako, Billy and Manu Vunipola as well as Kapeli Pifeleti started back in January and the support has been fantastic throughout the rugby community.

The Charity, Friends of Tonga was founded in 2018 after a devastating Category 4 Cyclone, FoT sought to support local disaster relief efforts, drive greater awareness of Tonga, and cultivate an engaged community to support the country.

The money will support students from all over Tonga, covering school fees, uniforms and books, as identified by the Tongan Ministry of Education.

The breakdown of the support below shows the significant impact that the fundraising has had.

Scholarships and support for students displaced by the tsunami:

Communities: Nomuka, Mango, Longolongo, and Atatā

Students supported: 53

Capacity training for community leaders and CSFT Staff:

Counseling certification from the Tupou Tertiary Institute (TTI)

Individuals supported: 5

Mako Vunipola thanked everyone for their immense gratitude towards this cause, which is of course very close to the players hearts.

“We are forever grateful for the generosity of everyone who has contributed towards this worthwhile cause.

It was devastating to see the impact that the Tsunami had back in Tonga, but putting smiles back on faces by helping in any way that we can makes us very proud.

Once again, thanks to everyone for your support and we look forward to seeing the country get back on its feet.”
