Three players named in Scottish World Cup squad
Saracens Women are delighted to confirm that three players have today been named in the Scottish World Cup squad.
Jodie Rettie, Louise McMillan and Coreen Grant will all be boarding the plane to New Zealand, having been named in Head Coach Bryan Easson’s 32-player squad.
The squad sees a split of 16 forwards and 16 backs, with all players selected, set for their first ever Rugby World Cup experience. Loughborough Ligntning’s Rachel Malcolm will captain the side, with Helen Nelson named as vice-captain.
Scotland having made their last appearance at the showpiece event 12 years ago and will face hosts and holders New Zealand in Pool A, alongside Australia and Wales.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Head Coach Easson admitted than there had been some tough selection decisions to make.
“A lot of discussions have been had, a lot of players have been played over the past year as well, so the process around that was to make sure we had the right players going. Selection has been tough as the players trained exceptionally hard over the summer, and then obviously getting the players back from the Commonwealth Games has been exciting for us as well.”
Of the Saracens players selected, forward Rettie was something of a latecomer to rugby, taking up the game at 17. She has excelled since then, earning her first international cap in 2018 against Wales and going on to win 17 caps for her country.
Fellow forward McMillan is a newcomer to Saracens this season. Capped 37 times, she made her international debut against Japan in 2016 and is equally comfortable at second row and backrow.
Outside back Grant, made her debut against Italy in the 2021 Six Nations. Having played university rugby for Durham and Cambridge, she will be looking to test herself against the best in New Zealand.
